Webinar Overview
Pneumococcal disease, including both invasive pneumococcal disease and noninvasive pneumococcal pneumonia, is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. It also is a costly disease, with the majority of the costs attributed to patients 65 years of age or older. When lost work days and productivity are taken into consideration, the cost of pneumococcal disease in younger adults is nearly as high as in the elderly.
In this webinar, the role of adult immunization in preventing pneumococcal disease will be reviewed, along with current recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for adult immunization against pneumococcal disease. The faculty will demonstrate strategies and tools that can be used in health systems to improve pneumococcal immunization rates for adult hospitalized patients. Examples of successful programs using a team approach will be described, and practical suggestions for addressing challenges will be shared.
Time for questions and answers will be provided at the end of the presentation.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this application-based continuing education activity, participants should be able to
- Describe the current ACIP recommendations for adult immunization against pneumococcal disease.
- Apply methods and tools to improve pneumococcal immunization rates for adult hospitalized patients.
- Outline a plan for reporting and monitoring pneumococcal immunization rates for adult hospitalized patients.
